Teddington accessibility improvements

We are looking to add lifts at Teddington station’s footbridge, to provide step-free access

We have developed proposals to add two new lift shafts to the existing footbridge, making Teddington station accessible for all passengers, particularly those with reduced mobility. The proposals form part of the Access for All (AfA) Programme which aims to introduce an obstacle free, accessible route to and between platforms.

Key benefits

At present, passengers with reduced mobility, who are unable to use the existing 52 step footbridge, are required to walk approximately 20 minutes along a busy road to move from one platform to another at Teddington station.

By adapting the existing footbridge and adding lifts, passengers will be able to easily cross from one platform to another.

Our plans

To add lifts to the footbridge we need to construct lift shafts and motor rooms which have planning permission granted by London Borough of Richmond. Some land will be required temporarily for construction purposes and some will be required permanently for one of the new lifts.

Subject to securing the necessary land, the works will be constructed in 2022/23.  We will keep disruption from our work to a minimum at all times while carrying out this essential project and inform the local community about the works so construction can continue safely.

Next Steps

In order to acquire the necessary land we submitted on Monday 5th October 2020 an application for a Transport and Works Act Order (TWAO) to the Secretary of State for Transport. If approved, this will grant Network Rail the powers to acquire the land and rights necessary for the works to be delivered. Network Rail will seek to use compulsory purchase powers only after all reasonable practicable means to negotiate their voluntary acquisition have been exhausted. The TWAO documents we have submitted can be viewed for information below.

There is an objection period that commences on the date of the application.  This ends on Wednesday 25 November 2020.

Should you wish to contact the Department for Transport regarding the TWAO their address is Transport Infrastructure Planning Unit, Department for Transport, Great Minster House, 33 Horseferry Road, London, SW1P 4DR or you can email at Please include ‘ Network Rail (Teddington Station Access For All) Order” in the title of any correspondence.
