HS2 Old Oak Common Station

We are currently working on behalf of HS2 Ltd to connect Old Oak Common up to the existing railway network.

The construction of HS2, Britain’s new high-speed railway, is well underway. This includes work on a new HS2 station at Old Oak Common in west London, which will be a transport super-hub, providing high speed trains to the Midlands, North West and Scotland. It will also provide access to the Elizabeth Line, Heathrow Express and GWR services.

Work began on the station and the surrounding railway in June 2021 and is set to finish between 2029 and 2033.

What work is taking place?

Old Oak Common will consist of fourteen platforms, including six for new high speed trains. It is the biggest newly built station to be constructed in the UK and major construction works are underway by HS2 Ltd. More information about their progress can be found on the HS2 website.

We are working to help connect the station to the existing railway network, ranging from station platforms, drainage and overhead power lines.

During these works, there will be some line closures on lines running into London Paddington while our teams work to connect the new station to the rest of our Wales and Western region.

When is the work taking place?

Between January and March 2024 prep work will continue on Sundays.

How will this work affect me?

From January to the end of March 2024, some Sunday services to and from London Paddington will be impacted as we continue our work at Old Oak Common.

Please check before you travel on National Rail.

Why is the work needed?

HS2 will transform travel between Britain’s biggest cities, improving journey times, adding rail capacity and supporting economic growth. Old Oak Common Station will be a major hub for HS2 services, and our work will connect the new station to the existing Wales and Western railway network, helping passengers travel across the country faster.

Past projects

Over Christmas 2023, our teams successfully completed four days of round the clock engineering work between Sunday 24 and Wednesday 27 December. With the line closed between Ealing Broadway and London Paddington, we:

  • Installed new overhead line equipment, including 1,200 metres of new wire that’ll power our trains
  • Installed 158 metres of new drainage pipes
  • Removed overhead line equipment that was no longer needed
