What we’re doing to minimise disruption and how delays can affect your journey
Delays are very frustrating, which is why we do everything we can to prevent them and provide information that is useful and up-to-date.
The demands on Britain’s railway continue to increase. At peak times, there is no space to run any extra trains on the busiest parts of the network, which can lead to congestion and unavoidable delays.
We know that when trains are delayed, it’s really important that we provide clear, accurate and useful information to help passengers plan their journey, wherever they are.
In this section, we look at the most common reasons for delays and explain what we do to try and prevent them and make sure trains arrive safely and on time.
How we keep you updated when there’s a delay
We work with train companies to get essential travel information out to passengers as quickly and efficiently as possible. We work through a plan to resolve the issue and keep passengers and potential travellers informed while we do so.
Around 60 per cent of passenger delays are attributed to us. As well as infrastructure faults, this includes delays caused by vandalism, cable theft, weather and trespass, which account for around 20 per cent of the total.
