Line closures

Between Monday 1 and Friday 5 November the line between Southampton Central and Bournemouth will be closed.

Also on Monday 1, the line between Brockenhurst and Lymington Pier will be closed, while Beaulieu Road station will not be served by rail replacement bus services.

A five-day line closure is a more efficient way of delivering these improvements and will allow us to complete more work while impacting fewer passengers. The alternative would be between three and four consecutive weekends of closures, disrupting many more journeys between Southampton, Brockenhurst and Bournemouth

Working around the clock we will work on a busy stretch of the railway to prevent speed restrictions being imposed and keep trains on the move.

We will carry out a wide range of work including:

  • Track level improvements at Brockenhurst, Sway and Hinton Admiral, in order to keep trains running at full line speeds through these areas
  • Drainage improvements in the Sway area, which will reduce delays and cancellations during extreme weather
  • Bridge maintenance in the Christchurch area, to ensure structures can support track and trains for years to come
  • Track and signalling maintenance in the Totton, Beaulieu Road, Brockenhurst and Christchurch areas
  • Enhancements to passenger information systems and repainting work at Sway station, to provide a better experience for our passengers
  • Installation of new rails between Hinton Admiral and Christchurch and new ballast and sleepers at Sway, to improve reliability.
