Bournemouth Main Line maintenance

We carried out £3 million worth of track and signal improvements during a five-day closure between Southampton, Brockenhurst and Bournemouth in November.

The line closure, which took place between Monday 1 and Friday 5 November 2021, was moved from the October half-term period in order to disrupt fewer passengers travelling in the New Forest area.

During this valuable period of uninterrupted access to the track, engineers carried out a wide range of work including:

  • Track maintenance at Brockenhurst station and in the Pokesdown for Boscombe area, to improve track quality
  • Track circuit changes in the Ashurst (New Forest) and Beaulieu Road areas, to improve the reliability of signalling
  • Delivery of a new electrical substation in Lymington, to make power supplies in the Lymington and Brockenhurst areas more reliable
  • Removal of wet beds – areas of the track where ballast has become saturated with water – in the Hinton Admiral area
  • Installation of new rails in Christchurch, together with new wheeltimbers to support rails, on a bridge crossing the River Stour

These improvements will mean a more reliable railway for South Western Railway (SWR) and CrossCountry services between Southampton Central and Bournemouth on the busy Bournemouth Main Line.
