We’re working to make the Calder Valley route between Manchester Victoria and Bradford Interchange via Halifax more reliable
As part of the Great North Rail Project, and in preparation for the Transpennine Route Upgrade, we’re upgrading track, making changes to stations, structures and signalling along the Calder Valley route, creating a more resilient railway for passengers in the north of England.

A look back at the work completed so far:
- In May 2018, work completed to install two new parallel moves, commonly known as “points”, to the south of Bradford Interchange station. This will allow services approaching from the south to cross over onto lines (and ultimately platforms) previously only available to services approaching from the east and vice versa.
- A new bay platform has been built at Rochdale station, providing a turn-back facility for services travelling from Manchester Victoria. This will enable more trains to run between the two stations in the future.
- Track has also been remodelled around Rochdale station to connect the new bay platform to the network and allow faster services to pass through the station. This will contribute to a cut in journey times on the Calder Valley line.
- Completely renewed the track through Sowerby Bridge Station.
Upcoming work in 2018
Network Rail is delivering a number of improvement schemes to Hebden Bridge station including longer platforms and new accessible facilities and passenger lifts.
Once complete, we will have upgraded over 19 miles of the Calder Valley route to allow more trains, with more seats and greater capacity for passengers to run on the network.
