The existing Ferryboat Lane stepped footbridge over the railway line between Mexborough and Old Denaby is becoming life expired.

It will be replaced by a modern footbridge just to the west of its existing location.

The new footbridge will have steps and ramps that will provide pedestrians with an easier, more pleasant and safer route over the railway between Mexborough and Old Denaby. The existing Ferryboat Lane footpath level crossing of the railway is also being closed by Doncaster Council at Network Rail’s request.

Our plans

The new footbridge has planning permission from Doncaster Council. Some land is required temporarily for construction purposes and some will be required permanently for the new footbridge. We will keep disruption from our work to a minimum at all times while carrying out this essential project and inform the local community about any temporary footpath closures and diversionary routes so construction can continue safely.

A Land Only Transport and Works Act Order (TWAO) was submitted to the Secretary of State for Transport in March 2020 to acquire the necessary land. However, agreement has now been reached with the landowner that will allow work to commence.

Doncaster Council is also making the necessary arrangements under the Highways Act to divert the public footpath from the existing level crossing and footbridge onto the proposed new footbridge.

The new footbridge has planning permission from Doncaster Council. Some land will be required temporarily for construction purposes and some will be required permanently for the new footbridge. Subject to securing the necessary land the footbridge will be constructed in 2022/23. We will keep disruption from our work to a minimum at all times while carrying out this essential project and inform the local community about footpath diversionary routes so construction can continue safely.

Next steps

There are some minor matters remaining to be addressed in the TWAO and the Secretary of State will now decide the unopposed Order. The TWAO documents we submitted in March 2020 can be viewed for information below. The deadline to submit objections closed on 12th May 2020 and can no longer be submitted.

TWAO application documents

Construction work to erect the new footbridge and remove the life expired footbridge will commence in Spring 2021 and be completed in Autumn 2021.
