Gloucester signal box upgrade

In autumn 2025 we need to upgrade Gloucester signal box to keep trains running smoothy

What work is taking place?

Gloucester signal box is a key control centre that manages trains travelling from Worcester, Bristol, Swindon and Chepstow. We need to replace over 10,000 wires to ensure it remains in good working order long into the future.

How will this work affect me?

Saturday 27 September to Sunday 5 October 2025

  • Buses replace trains between Cheltenham Spa, Gloucester and Lydney
  • No trains will run from Gloucester
  • Trains will still run from Cheltenham Spa towards Bristol and Stroud but won’t stop at Gloucester
  • Trains will still run from Lydney towards Chepstow and Cardiff

Saturday 27 September, Sunday 28 September, Saturday 4 October and Sunday 5 October 2025

  • Buses replace trains between Worcester Foregate Street, Ashchurch for Tewkesbury, Cheltenham Spa, Gloucester, Lydney, Cam and Dursley, Yate, Bristol Parkway, Stonehouse, Stroud, Kemble and Swindon
  • Trains still run from Cheltenham Spa to Worcestershire Parkway and Birmingham New Street
  • Trains still run from Lydney towards Chepstow and Cardiff

What’s already been done?

We’ve been working throughout 2025 to improve the railway between Gloucester and Lydney.

In May, we replaced track near Lydney and installed new drainage near Newnham-on-Severn. In July and August, we completed phase four/five of the Severn Estuary Resilience Programme to:

  • Install 2,400 rock nails to protect the embankment
  • Secure 21,100 m² of fencing
  • Upgrade track and drainage in Newnham tunnel
  • Improve the level crossing at Westbury-on-Severn
