Crewe Station Improvement work
A multi-million-pound investment to improve Crewe station is set to get underway, delivering a safer and more reliable railway at one of Britain’s most important transport hubs.

Story Contracting, on behalf of Network Rail will renew sections of track, upgrade signalling and overhead power lines, and carry out improvements to the station’s roof.
The work marks the next stage of railway upgrades at Crewe, supporting one of the busiest and most important interchange stations on the West Coast Main Line. Once complete, the improvements will help boost reliability, reduce the need for future maintenance and enhance the experience of passengers travelling through the station.
Crewe plays a vital role in connecting communities across the North West with destinations throughout the Midlands, London, Wales, Scotland and beyond. These essential upgrades will help support those connections for years to come.
What work are we carrying out?
Engineers will be delivering a wide range of improvements at Crewe station and on the surrounding railway, including:
- Renewing sections of track
- Upgrading signalling equipment
- Renewing overhead line equipment (OLE)
- Carrying out structural improvements to the station roof
- Preparing for future station canopy improvements
Replacing ageing infrastructure will improve the reliability of services, reduce the frequency of future maintenance and help ensure the station continues to operate effectively as a key national rail hub.
When is the work taking place?
The programme begins during Christmas 2026 and will continue throughout 2027.
Engineering teams will work over Christmas Day and Boxing Day, when trains are not running, allowing improvements to begin without affecting passenger services.
This work will set the foundations for a wider programme of railway upgrades throughout 2027, beginning with a nine-day railway closure from 13 February 2027.
A number of other closures and periods of disruptive access will also be required throughout the programme to allow work to be carried out safely and efficiently.
We’re working closely with train operators and industry partners to minimise disruption wherever possible and ensure customers are kept on the move.
Information about future engineering work and service alterations will be provided well in advance to help passengers plan their journeys.
How will this work affect me?
Some train services will be amended when engineering work takes place, so customers are advised to:
- Check your journey before travelling
- Allow additional time where necessary
- Follow the latest advice from your train operator and National Rail Enquiries
Details of future service changes will be added to this page once they have been confirmed.
Why is this work needed?
Crewe station has been at the heart of Britain’s railway for generations and remains one of the country’s most important rail interchanges.
Much of the existing infrastructure is reaching the end of its operational life. Sections of track, signalling systems and overhead power equipment require renewal to maintain reliability and performance.
Parts of the station roof and train shed also need to be improved to ensure they remain fit for the future.
The improvements will:
- Deliver a safer and more reliable railway
- Reduce the amount of future maintenance required
- Improve resilience across the rail network
- Support future investment in the station
By carrying out this work now, Network Rail can help ensure Crewe continues to support passenger and freight services across the region and the wider UK rail network for years to come.
