Sussex Railway Upgrade plan

We’re modernising the railway network with a record level of investment to improve passenger journeys across Sussex.

The railway in Sussex is among the busiest and most congested in the country. The infrastructure on the line is also some of the oldest and most intensively used.

Between 2019-2024 we’re investing £750m as part of our Sussex Railway Upgrades to modernise ageing track, signalling, stations, structures and earthworks to give passengers more reliable journeys.

The signalling and track at key junctions will be replaced on the lines into London Victoria as part of the four-year Victoria Resignalling programme . We’re continuing to use extended closures to deliver work more quickly and minimise disruption to passengers. We invested £22m over a 9-day closure of the Arun Valley in summer 2021, as part of the Arun Valley Line Improvement Project. In February 2022, we invested £15m during a 9-day closure to complete essential work between Three Bridges and Brighton.

Gatwick Airport station is now bigger and better than ever before, with double the space for passengers, new lifts and escalators and a brand new concourse the size of eight tennis courts. The investment has improved accessibility for all passengers, supports a more reliable train service and provides a gateway station that befits the country’s second busiest airport.
