Transpennine route upgrade

We’re upgrading the railway between Manchester Victoria to Leeds and Selby / York.

This investment will deliver faster and more frequent rail services with space for more passengers by improving connections between key towns and cities across the north of England.

Transpennine route upgrade map

The route covers:

  • 76 miles of track (122 km)
  • Eight tunnels
  • 13 viaducts
  • 25 stations

Millions of passengers used the route in 2015. Over the next 20 years it is forecast that passenger numbers will double.

As part of the route upgrade, we’re upgrading bridges, tunnels, track, junctions and signalling. We’ll need to assess 38 level crossings along the route, remove trees and install fencing. We’re also installing overhead line equipment so that electric trains can run along the route.
