Improving London Waterloo station
Improving the experience for passengers at London Waterloo
We’re making good progress on upgrades at London Waterloo station, working with South Western Railway to keep journeys safe, reliable and the station open while improvements are delivered.

New escalators at Waterloo
The new escalators at Exit 2, connecting the National Rail station with the Jubilee line and Waterloo Road have been installed ahead of schedule.
Two escalators were replaced and opened for service back in in December 2025. The remaining two have since been replaced three weeks ahead of schedule (they were expected to return to service by June 2026).
The old escalators had reached the end of their working life. Customers can now use modern, more reliable equipment that will require less maintenance and improve their experience at the station.
We’re sorry for any disruption this work may have caused and thank you for bearing with us throughout the work.

Repairing London Waterloo’s 100-year-old roof

After more than 100 years of protecting passengers from the elements, the concourse roof glazing is being replaced to improve long term safety and reliability.
Work includes:
- Replacing ageing glazing panels and their support structures
- Strengthening steelwork and improving drainage
- Refreshing the overall appearance of the concourse roof
- Replacing glazing panels on the North Port Cochere in Cab Road (the covered vehicle drop off area that provides shelter for customers)
To keep passengers safe while work continues, a temporary roof and scaffolding structure has been installed beneath the existing roof. This will move across the concourse as the work progresses.
The work is being delivered in phases and is currently planned to complete in early 2027.
How will the station be affected?
- Passenger services and retail outlets will continue to operate as normal
- Temporary staircases will be removed in stages as work progresses
- All work involving temporary structures and access stairwells will take place at night to minimise noise and dust during normal station operations
