Brighton Road bridge near Coulsdon South station
We’ve installed protection barriers to the bridge that carries the Brighton Main Line over Brighton Road (A237) to protect the bridge and the railway from vehicle collisions.
Project timeline
Work began on 1 September 2025 and the final sections of the work took place over the summer of 2026.
What work took place?
Work began in September 2025, and the collision protection beams were installed in July 2026. The final stage of the beam installation was completed on Friday 21 August 2026.
On the nights of 23 and 24 September 2026, between 21:00 and 05:30, we will install additional signage on the bridge abutments, complete the lighting connections for the bridge signage and remove the remaining fencing and barriers.
Pedestrian access and public vehicle access to and from the station beneath the bridge will be maintained throughout the works. There will be a temporary reduction in parking availability within the station car park, as part of the area will be used to store the plant and equipment required for the works. Seven parking bays will be suspended from 00:01 on Wednesday 23 September until 23:59 on Friday 25 September 2026.
When did the work take place?
The work began in September 2025 and the collision beams were installed in July 2026. We completed the final stages of the work on Friday 21 August.
Why was the work needed?
Bridge strikes are a major cause of train delays and infrastructure damage. Despite efforts like improved signage and driver education, the Brighton Road bridge continues to be hit. Installing protection beams is a proven solution that will safeguard the bridge, reduce delays, and improve reliability for thousands of daily passengers.
