This Easter bank holiday weekend, we completed £90m worth of work across the railway.
Here’s a rundown of some of what we got up to in numbers.

Our team carried out 493 different pieces of work across Britain this Easter – most overnight to minimise disruptions where possible. We also kept more than 95% of the railway open business as usual.

The metres of new rail we laid down across the country. We also put down over 40,000 tonnes of new ballast – the stones that support the tracks. Maintaining track helps keep your trains running smoothly and safely.

The Transpennine Route Upgrade team spent 10 days upgrading the line between Huddersfield station and Mirfield. We renewed Huddersfield Viaduct and replaced track there.
The team were also busy on Easter Monday supporting the Rotary Club of Hebden Bridge at its annual Duck Race. We helped take the rubber ducks to the river and managed the road closure nearby. Locals then collected the ducks at the end of the race to use next year.
The Transpennine Route Upgrade is a major, multi-billion-pound programme set to give you better journeys between York and Manchester via Leeds and Huddersfield.

The investment we made to make the Cross City line in Birmingham and Lichfield Trent Valley more reliable.
The Cross City line was already planned for closure between Birmingham and Lichfield so that Birmingham City Council could complete vital upgrades on the road – A38 (M) Tame Valley – that runs above the line.
We took advantage of this closure to complete our own track upgrades and signalling maintenance to minimise disruption to your services,

We also kept busy building the rail link to the freight terminal at SEGRO Logistics Park in Northampton, which is due to complete this year. Freight services will take up to 300 lorries off the roads every day by moving thousands of tonnes of goods from the roads onto rail.
We even removed scrap material from the site, which we’ll sell, reuse or recycle.

Our teams worked around the clock to install 40-tonne track panels, lifted in by crane, at Denbigh Hall in Milton Keynes. We also replaced track and laid new ballast here – all to make your journeys more reliable in the future.
