Leeds station transformation
We’re investing £303m in creating a station Leeds can be proud of.
Leeds station is the third largest outside of London with 33 million+ passengers crossing the concourse every year. Network Rail and developers BAM – supported by £303m funding from the Department for Transport – will be transforming the station over the next five years.
Every day, up to 90,000 people travel through Leeds station on their way to work, school, holidays and days out – that’s almost 33 million people every year – and passenger numbers are only going to grow as more people choose to travel by train.
To handle these volumes the Department for Transport is funding £303m of transformative improvements over the next five years to reinvent Leeds station into a modern transport hub worthy of the city it sits within. Network Rail will be working with partners BAM to deliver a lighter, brighter, easier to navigate space with new entrances and facilities to meet the changing needs of the city’s main transport hub.
As the fourth biggest city in the UK and second largest station out of London, a key financial centre and a gateway to everything Yorkshire has to offer, Leeds station needs to reflect just how important Leeds is to the wider economy.
What’s changing?
We’re changing the flow of the station to make it lighter, brighter and easier to navigate, moving the ticket barriers and opening up the main concourse to reduce bottlenecks and connect you safely to your train and the centre of Leeds.
We’ll be creating a fifth entrance to the station on Neville Street to make getting to your train quicker and easier, wherever you are in the city centre.
We’ll be building a new walkway across the tracks to help you get to your platform more easily, and introducing new spaces and facilities, including new toilets and a first-class lounge.
Subject to funding, we’re also looking to make improvements to platform 17, widening access for passenger safety and lengthening the platform to allow for more, and longer trains, for services running out of Leeds to Sheffield, Nottingham and Lincoln.
When will work take place?
