Latest developments in ongoing work to reopen railway through Bransty Tunnel in Whitehaven

After previous assessments and testing were carried out within Bransty tunnel, we uncovered that certain areas under the railway need to be strengthened for trains to run safely. As a result, the tunnel was closed in August 2025 while further examinations took place.

Ground investigations at two locations in Whitehaven were also undertaken, to better aid our understanding of the ground conditions in the local area and around the tunnel portal.

What work is taking place?

Following a review of the findings, we are pleased to confirm has Network Rail has identified a viable way to restore rail services on the Cumbrian Coast Line through Whitehaven and also treat the orange water that is being discharged into the town’s harbour.

The £60 million proposed solution would address the underground issues affecting Bransty Tunnel and allow for the track and drainage systems along the railway to be renewed.

In addition, it would also prevent orange, discoloured water passing through the tunnel from historic mine workings and entering Whitehaven Harbour. A small water treatment plant would be built beside the railway and operated by Network Rail.

While this work is still subject to securing the necessary approvals and permits, finding a viable solution and securing dedicated funding is a major step forward as we continue to work with local stakeholders, the Environment Agency, the Mining Remediation Authority and the Harbour Authority.
