Fratton station footbridge
We’re strengthening and refurbishing the 127-year-old footbridge at Fratton station so that it can serve the community for years to come

What work is taking place?
Engineers are carrying out extensive improvements to the footbridge which include:
- Strengthening the footbridge itself to meet current design safety standards
- Resurfacing the footbridge platform
- Providing new drainage over the footbridge
- Honouring the city by painting the footbridge in Portsmouth colours
- Replacing stair treads and handrails
- Installing new compliant lighting
- Renovating the heritage masonry arch to the north of the station
- Refurbishing the timber canopies on the platform stairs
- Installing new mesh panelled edge protection
When is the work taking place?
Our engineers started work in January 2025.
We’ve experienced setbacks during the project; additional steel work repairs were required to strengthen the structure, and it’s taken longer than expected to sympathetically restore the heritage masonry arch so that it is structurally sound.
We now expect to reopen the footbridge in July 2025. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this has caused and thank you for bearing with us during the hold up!
How will this work affect me?
The footbridge provides access from Goldsmith Avenue to the south, and Selbourne Terrace to the north. A temporary pedestrian diversion is in place that takes 6 minutes to reach either side.
Why is this work needed?
Built in 1897 from wrought and cast iron, the footbridge needs substantial strengthening and refurbishment to ensure its longevity so it can serve the community for many more years.
