Fareham and Havant to Portsmouth area improvement work

Our engineers are strengthening the railway infrastructure to keep trains running safely in the Portsmouth area

What work is taking place?

Between Saturday 28 March and Thursday 2 April 2026 we will be strengthening critical pieces of infrastructure in the Portsmouth area. We will be strengthening the viaduct between Portsmouth and Cosham, which crosses over Portcreek.
We will also be strengthening the iconic Landport Viaduct at Portsmouth & Southsea station.

How will this work impact me?

Buses will replace trains from Fareham and Havant to Portsmouth between Saturday 28 March and Thursday 2 April while we carry out these works.

Our engineers will also be working around the clock, and we will be in touch with local communities to give details about our working hours closer to the time.

Why is the work needed?

Constructed in 1897, the Portcreek railway viaduct needs to be renewed to continue to safely carry trains across Ports Creek.

The Landport Viaduct, even older, constructed in 1867, equally needs repair and maintenance work to continue to serve trains in and out of Portsmouth.

Take a look at the below video to see what work we completed last year.
