Standedge to Gledholt (Huddersfield) upgrades

The Transpennine Route Upgrade is a major, multi-billion pound programme of improvements. It will bring more frequent, faster, greener trains between York, Leeds and Manchester on a better, cleaner, more reliable railway.

To enable this to happen, we are proposing a number of upgrades between Standedge to Gledholt (Huddersfield).

Our proposals

Our proposals include changes at Marsden and Slaithwaite stations, the reconstruction of various bridges and highways to allow us to install overhead line equipment (OLE) and additional tracks that will power faster, cleaner trains through the area.

We are also proposing a number of temporary work compounds to help us carry out these essential improvements.

We are keen to share the proposals with the local community and hear your feedback on our plans.

The consultation for the Standedge to Gledholt (Huddersfield) Enhancements scheme is now live (Monday 16 February) and closes on Friday 27 March 2026.

To view our proposals and provide feedback online, please visit our virtual consultation room.

In-person consultation events will also take place to offer the local community and stakeholders a chance to view our proposals and speak with the project team directly. These will be held on:

  • Tuesday 24 February, 2:30pm–6:30pm at Slaithwaite Community Centre, Bank Gate, Slaithwaite, Huddersfield, HD7 5DL
  • Thursday 26 February, 2:30pm–6:30pm at Marsden Mechanics, Peel Street, Huddersfield, HD7 6BW

We request that all feedback be sent to us by Friday 27 March 2026. Following this, all feedback will be considered before we submit a Transport and Works Act Order application to the Secretary of State in Winter 2026.

An information event will be held ahead of the submission of the Transport and Works Act Order.

Next steps

A Transport and Works Act Order (TWAO) is required to deliver the elements of the Transpennine Route Upgrade we are consulting on here. This is a piece of legislation approved by the Secretary of State for Transport, granting permission to carry out the work.

Following the consultation process, we will consider all the feedback received before we submit our Transport and Works Act Order application later this year.
