Standedge to Gledholt (Huddersfield) upgrades
The Transpennine Route Upgrade is a major, multi-billion pound programme of improvements. It will bring more frequent, faster, greener trains between York, Leeds and Manchester on a better, cleaner, more reliable railway.

To enable this to happen, we are proposing a number of upgrades between Standedge to Gledholt (Huddersfield).
Our proposals
Our proposals include changes at Marsden and Slaithwaite stations, the reconstruction of various bridges and highways to allow us to install overhead line equipment (OLE) and additional tracks that will power faster, cleaner trains through the area.
We are also proposing a number of temporary work compounds to help us carry out these essential improvements.
We are keen to share the proposals with the local community and hear your feedback on our plans.

In person consultation events will be taking place towards the end of February 2026, which will provide an opportunity for the local community to come and speak with the project team, find out more about the proposed work and ask any questions they may have.
More details about these will be advertised on this page in due course, along with a link to our virtual consultation room.
Next steps
A Transport and Works Act Order (TWAO) is required to deliver the elements of the Transpennine Route Upgrade we are consulting on here. This is a piece of legislation approved by the Secretary of State for Transport, granting permission to carry out the work.
Following the consultation process, we will consider all the feedback received before we submit our Transport and Works Act Order application later this year.
