Bransty tunnel track renewal

Renewing the track in Bransty tunnel to ensure the reliability of train services on the Cumbrian coastline

Project timeline

This project is due to start in late July and complete at the end of September.

What work is taking place?

Bransty tunnel is a key part of the route on the Cumbrian Coast line between Whitehaven and Carlisle. The tunnel is one kilometre long and flooding sometimes affects services. Recently the tunnel has been flooded with historic mine water which has further degraded the tracks so it is very important that we carry out this work.

To ensure the track and drainage is fit for the future, we are replacing the whole section of track in the tunnel. During this time the tunnel will be closed and there will be rail replacement bus services in place.

The work to replace the track and drainage is separate to any work that is planned to improve the ocherous appearance of the water in the marina. We continue to work with partners such as the Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners, the Environment Agency and the Mining Remediation Authority as part of the Whitehaven Task Force.

You can find more information about the orange water in the harbour and the work of the Whitehaven Task Force here: Why is the water orange in Whitehaven Harbour?

When is the work taking place?

Due to the complex nature of carrying out a track and drainage renewal in the tunnel there are two sections of work taking place.

We are carrying out some survey work on the tunnel for safety reasons from late Friday 25 to Monday 28 July 2025. This is standard practice when planning a track and drainage renewal of this kind. During this period there will be rail replacement bus services in place between Whitehaven and Workington.

The full track and drainage renewal will take place from 30 August until 23 September. We know this work will be disruptive and have scheduled it at this time to avoid the peak holiday season. We appreciate your patience during this time.

How will this work affect me?

From 26 July to 28 July and 30 August to 23 September 2025, trains between Whitehaven and Workington will be replaced by a bus. Passengers are being urged to check www.nationalrail.co.uk to plan their journeys in advance.

Why is the work needed?

The work is needed due to ingress of iron ochre as well as ongoing flooding issues. To keep passengers and freight safely on the move, the track and drainage system needs to be fully replaced.

I have a question about the project – how can I get in touch?
