Bexley station subway
From Saturday 6 September, the pedestrian subway at Bexley station will permanently close because of significant structural defects
What are we doing?
We are permanently closing the pedestrian subway that takes passengers between platforms 1 and 2.
After the subway is infilled, we will resurface and make changes to platforms to create more space for passengers.
Why can’t the subway be kept open?
While there is no immediate risk, extensive structural inspections identified defects that present a long-term risk to the safety of customers and the integrity of the railway line.
Engineers explored a range of options to keep the subway open, but the complexity of repairs to the structure, which supports the railway line above meant that the only practical solution was a permanent closure.
Repairs would require long closures of the station and the lines, which is very busy with both passenger and freight services.
Project timeline
- Early August – Site setup begins
- 6 September – Subway closes
- Early September – Demolition and service diversions
- Late September – Subway infill
- Late November – Subway works complete
- November – May – Platform surfacing and adjustments
How will passengers be impacted by the work?
There will be more space on the platforms once the tunnel entrances are covered over, and customers can still easily cross between the platforms using the lifts and footbridge that were opened in 2024 as part of a £6m Access for All investment that made the station fully step-free.
Station staff will be on hand during the work to help passengers and to ensure that everyone is able to move around the station as smoothly as possible.
Following the closure of the subway there be further work to resurface the platforms and replace lighting columns.
