Apsley Access for All: Making the station fully step free

Passengers at Apsley station will soon benefit from full step free access to every platform as we deliver a major accessibility upgrade funded by the Department for Transport’s Access for All programme

The £8.9m project will improve safety, accessibility and the overall passenger experience for people travelling through Apsley.

We’re installing three new lifts onto the station’s existing footbridge, creating an unobstructed and accessible route between platforms 1, 2, 3 and 4. Currently, only platform 4 has step free access.

Alongside the new lifts, we’re making a series of improvements to create a safer, more secure and more inclusive station environment, including:

  • Upgrades to power supplies
  • New CCTV in lifts and along the accessible route
  • Improved lighting on the footbridge
  • New help points and fire refuge areas to support safety and confidence for all passengers

How the work affects access at the station

To safely deliver the improvements, some temporary changes will be made at the station:

Construction compound in car park

A dedicated work compound will be located in the station car park. This means all customer parking spaces and vehicle access to the station approach road will be unavailable and under the control of the Principal Contractor throughout construction. This includes pick up and drop off.

Pedestrian access will remain available. Please use alternative parking at Hemel Hempstead or Kings Langley stations.

Platforms remain open

The station will stay open and trains will continue running. To keep everyone safe, platforms will be temporarily shortened while engineers build the lift shafts and upgrade the footbridge.

When is the work happening?

  • Enabling work: February 2026
  • Main construction begins: March 2026
  • Lifts ready and station fully step free: By Christmas 2026

Stay informed

Passengers will be kept informed throughout the work, with temporary arrangements in place to minimise disruption.

If you’re travelling during the work, please check your journey.

Meet the team

To help answer questions and share more about the upgrade, we’re inviting nearby residents and businesses to an informal drop-in event where plans will be on display and teams will be available to talk through what the work means for you.
