Lewisham station – congestion relief scheme

We’re moving the platform 1 ticket gates at Lewisham station to help reduce congestion, improve safety and support future passenger growth

We are relocating the existing Platform 1 ticket gates to the upper DLR concourse to make it easier for people to move through the station, especially during busy times. The project includes:

  • Four new ticket gates on the upper DLR concourse
  • Removal of the current ticket gates on platform 1
  • Upgraded CCTV and security systems
  • Improved signage to guide passengers through the station
  • Adjustments to station layout to support safer, easier journeys through the station.

Passenger benefits

Once complete, passengers will experience:

  • Less congestion on Platform 1 during peak times
  • Improved safety, with queues moved away from the platform edge
  • Improved passenger flow in station
  • Better resilience as footfall continues to grow in the coming years
  • Clearer wayfinding through updated signage.

When is the work taking place?

Work started in March 2026 and is expected to finish by April 2026.

How will this work affect me?

During the works, there may be:

  • Temporary changes to walking routes
  • Occasional closures of station entry points
  • Busier areas as we transition to the new layout

Clear information and signage will be in place throughout, and staff will be available to assist at key times.

Why is the work needed?

Lewisham is a busy south east London interchange providing mainline and Docklands Light Railway (DLR) services. Significant development and population growth around the station has led to much higher passenger numbers.

Currently:

  • Platform 1 experiences regular congestion, particularly in the morning peak.
  • Queues often extend onto the platforms

Without intervention, crowding and congestion will only increase in the years ahead.
