insight – using AI to run a reliable railway

World leading technology built by Network Rail

insight is a web-based decision support tool designed, developed and delivered by Network Rail. It gives Network Rail the ability to proactively manage defects whilst also providing failure predictions up to a year in advance, giving them time to fix issues before they impact passengers and freight customers.

A more reliable railway

Data from measurement trains, track images and remote condition monitoring all feed into insight to create a ‘big picture’ of the railway. insight uses machine learning algorithms to predict and warn maintenance teams when a fault is likely to happen. This warning gives teams time to fix issues before they delay trains, and to carry out work when the network is quieter and contributing towards a more reliable railway all round.

A safer railway for all

With improved visibility of what, where and when assets need repairing, maintenance teams can prevent potentially dangerous failures such as derailments and keep passengers safe.

insight also provides a safety benefit for front line teams. By collating a wealth of information into a single web-app they are better placed to prevent and fix faults from the safety of their desk, only going on-track when necessary.

Crunching big data in the cloud

Microsoft provides the cloud architecture to process the vast amounts of data needed for proactive and predictive maintenance and asset management. This collaborative case study shows how Network Rail is embracing technology for a simpler, better, and greener railway.
