Test tracks

Our dedicated test tracks are the railway’s link between innovation and implementation – and we want your thoughts on their future

Our testing facilities are located across two sites in Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire and in Tuxford in Nottinghamshire. The team that runs these sites (formerly known as RIDC) is part of our Engineering Services function, tapping into unmatched knowledge in domains such as systems reliability and technology development.

The test tracks are strategically important because they provide a safe environment where new and modified trains, machines, plant, tools, processes, infrastructure and other technologies can be tested by the railway industry, its suppliers or other partners.

They are also ideally suited and regularly used for research and training in a live but controlled railway environment.

Have your say

We are consulting on the future needs for the test tracks as we develop a strategy to maximise their use.
You can input into this consultation here: The future of the test tracks

It isn’t just the physical test tracks that are invaluable to the railway industry – the range of novel and forefront technologies tested at the facilities over the years mean they are operated and maintained by staff whose expertise are unparalleled. Anyone testing their solutions at the test tracks have access to real world railway experience and connections with those running the main line railway that simply do not exist elsewhere.

Safe, simple, cost-effective – and real-world

The test tracks closely represent the operational railway and include many characteristics found across our national network, making them a safe and reliable testing environment for the railway of the future.

High speed testing at Old Dalby

Having been opened in 1966 to accelerate the development of the high-tech, high-speed Advanced Passenger Train, the test track at Old Dalby provides 13 miles of modern intercity railway (including 11 miles of live overhead electrification) that allows trains to run up to 125mph.

Unique plant assurance at Tuxford

A former cross-country line, the test track at Tuxford provides 10 miles of diverse, high quality railway alignment enabling testing at up to 75mph. It includes the only RIS-1530-PLT rail plant assurance rig in Britain, as well as other facilities for trialling on-track plant and machines.

Use the facilities

Testing and assurance

The test tracks have a proven record in accommodating the diverse needs of testing and assuring high speed passenger trains, freight wagons, on-track plant and machines, new infrastructure, tools, processes, and so much more.

Research and development

We are a member of the UK Rail Research and Innovation Network (UKRRIN) and work closely with universities, research bodies, regulators and suppliers to provide the physical conditions and invaluable expertise of the real railway.

Teaching and training

Our sites are certified as training facilities, and the diversity of the railway environments we simulate are ideally suited to teaching for further and higher education establishments, in-work training and continuing professional development.

Did you know?

High speed rail across the globe owes a legacy to the research done at Old Dalby for the Advanced Passenger Train.
