The City of London has officially validated our planning application to develop London Liverpool Street station.

It’s a big step forward in our plans to improve Britain’s busiest station and make it fit for the future.

Britain’s busiest station

Right now, London Liverpool Street welcomes 118 million people a year. But we expect that number to rise to 158 million by 2041 – and could go even higher.

We must make sure the station is ready for the future. And that’s why we’ve worked on a large programme of improvements since last year.

For example, in May we added 21 new ticket gates to help you move through the station faster and more comfortably. We’re also renewing and refurbishing the vast Victorian glass roof that’ll make the station brighter and prevent leaks.

But we want to go further. Our submitted plans will help make room for over 200 million passengers in the years ahead.

So what’s changing?

Our plans will make the station more spacious, easier to get around, and better connected to the rest of London and beyond.

Whether you’re hopping on a train, catching the Tube, using the Elizabeth line, or walking or cycling, the new design will make your journey smoother.

Our plans include:

  • more space – less crowding, especially during rush hour
  • step-free access – making it easier for everyone to get around, including those with mobility needs, prams or luggage
  • better connections – seamless links between trains, the Underground, buses, and walking routes
  • a better experience – modern facilities designed with you in mind.

For instance, we plan to install new lifts, escalators and stairs to improve your movement through the station. We’ll also add new entrances at Hope Square and Bishopsgate Square, cycling parking and an access ramp support more accessible travel.

Sir Andrew Haines, chief executive at Network Rail, said: “The station proposed in this application is absolutely what London needs. An accessible, inclusive, world-class multi-modal transport gateway to the heart of London – designed to serve the City, all Londoners, and everyone who travels through it.”

Working with our partners

We’ve taken great care to work with our close industry partners including Transport for London and Historic England to develop these plans.

The work will create an integrated station that celebrates its national heritage and serves everyone from within London, East Anglia, the east of England and beyond.

We hope this way of working together will become a guide for future infrastructure projects in London, too.

And these plans aren’t just about travel – we want to boost the capital. Our research show that these improvements could bring in up to £4.6bn a year by attracting more visitors and making it easier to get around.

Show your support

It’s time for London Liverpool Street to get the upgrade it needs to match the way we travel today, and tomorrow.

But we need your voice to make it happen.
