How major Derby upgrade completion benefits passengers

We’ve just handed back Derby station following a £200m project to enable faster and more reliable journeys.

The biggest investment in Derby’s railway – the Derby Resignalling Project – has completed after 79 days.

The work – part of the Midland Main Line Upgrade – included the remodelling of track and signalling systems, a new station platform and the extension of an existing footbridge.

Benefits

Before the upgrade, a complicated track layout at Derby constrained trains coming through the station. This regularly resulted in train services being held outside the station, waiting for a free platform or safe passage through.

  • Our engineers have simplified the track layout and signalling systems in the area. This will separate the flow of traffic through the station, meaning those services passing through can travel faster.
  • Specific train services will also have dedicated platforms, enabling quicker and more reliable services.
  • We have built a 340-metre platform opposite the existing platform 6.
  • To accommodate the new platform, the existing footbridge has been extended to include new stairs and lifts.
