Sustainability

We’re committed to delivering a greener railway that connects people and moves goods for generations to come.

It’s not just about delivering green projects; it’s also about embedding sustainability into everything we do.

How do we achieve this?

To achieve this, we need to put sustainability at the core of how we do business and for this reason our refreshed strategic ambitions are to have:

  • a railway that is fit for the future
  • a railway that cares for the environment
  • a railway that helps communities thrive

Our refreshed strategy for delivering a greener railway

We’ve identified eight priority areas that will help us achieve our ambitions, which you can explore below. All eight areas are supported by our desire to build a culture of sustainability across our organisation.

A railway that is fit for the future

  • Supporting the delivery of net zero
  • Contributing to a circular economy
  • Adapting to a changing climate

A railway that cares for the environment

  • Supporting nature’s recovery
  • Protecting land, air and water

A railway that helps communities thrive

  • Improving the wellbeing of communities
  • Creating an inclusive and accessible railway
  • Supporting local economies

As well as our Greener Railway strategy, in 2023 we worked with partners across the rail industry on the launch of the Sustainable Rail Blueprint (SRB). The SRB is the industry-wide blueprint for realising sustainable rail, and we are committed to supporting it. We also remain committed to supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Our strategy document shows where our ambitions and priorities align with both of these important sustainability initiatives.
