Undergraduate placement opportunities

The difference is you - A career as bright and unique as you are

If you’d like to find out what it’s like to work for us before you graduate then our summer or year in industry placements are an ideal starting point

Our placements are not for the faint-hearted. You’ll experience the scope, scale and variety of our work, with several challenges and projects packed into a short-term period. If you do well on your placement you could even walk away with an offer to come back and join us on one of our graduate schemes once you’ve finished university.

Eligibility criteria

Our year in industry placement schemes are designed for students who are still currently studying towards their degree and need to spend a year in industry as part of their course. Our summer placements schemes have been created for students who may not have this option, but would still like to experience a career at Network Rail. Candidates who have already graduated or are due to graduate before the start of the scheme are not eligible for these schemes and should consider applying for one of our graduate schemes instead.

Candidates studying on a Tier 4 visa will need to provide a letter from their education sponsor (university) addressed to Network Rail to confirm that the year in industry placement forms an integral and assessed part of their course and will not breach their Tier 4 work placement restrictions. The letter should also include the terms and conditions of the work placement, including the work that the candidate will be expected to carry out for its duration and how they will be assessed. Candidates should ensure they speak with their education sponsor to determine whether they can obtain this letter from them before starting their application for any of the year in industry placement schemes.

Having attained a 2:2 or above at the end of their first year, candidates should be on course for at least a 2:2 overall.

Have you got what it takes?

We’re looking for people who have plenty of drive, who are comfortable with change and who enjoy having autonomy. If that sounds like you, you’ll be able to shape your own career just as much as you’ll be able to shape our future.

What immediately struck me upon joining Network Rail was the sheer breadth of activities it undertakes on a daily basis. In very few businesses are there so many opportunities available to you so early on in your career.
