Punctuality on the national rail network

Together, Britain’s rail companies and Network Rail are adopting the most transparent measure for train punctuality of any railway in Europe as part of its drive to improve services for passengers for the long-term.

You can read the Rail Delivery Group (RDG) announcement about this on the RDG website.

We are now reporting the proportion of trains arriving to the minute rather than the current official measure, known as the public performance measure (PPM), where short and long distance trains are considered ‘on time’ if they are five or 10 minutes after schedule respectively.

Train punctuality is also planned to be measured at every station on the timetable (known as a station stop) as opposed to current measure of the final destination only. At present, current technology allows us to measure punctuality to the minute for 80% of all station stops and we are working to increase this.

The figures below illustrate this new measure using the most recent data – how punctually trains are reaching stations, from ‘early’ through to ‘30 minutes after’ the timetable.

More detailed data, including historic figures, can be found on the ORR website.
