As part of the Great North Rail Project, we’re working to create a better railway station for both passengers and the community in Hebden Bridge.
We are investing to improve Hebden Bridge station for passengers and the community, in collaboration with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Northern Rail. As a result of these improvements, alongside wider investment across the north, customers travelling through Calder Valley will benefit from longer trains, step free access, additional car parking spaces and more reliable journeys.
Step free access
As part of the Department for Transport’s Access for All programme, we are improving accessibility from entrance to platform, opening up access to rail journeys not only for those with reduced mobility, but also people with children, heavy luggage or shopping.
This work will involve the renovation of the old lift shafts, enabling the installation of two new 16 person lifts, providing step free access into the current underpass. We will also be making improvements to the access at the front of the Station building.
To accommodate newer, longer trains with more seats, Network Rail is working with Northern Rail and TransPennine Express on the North of England Extension Programme.
Platforms one and two
Work to extend both platforms at Hebden Bridge completed in September 2018.
Car Park extension
As part of the West Yorkshire Plus Transport Fund, a package of car park extensions at rail stations has been identified to enhance connectivity to, from and within West Yorkshire.
As part of our work at Hebden Bridge, we will be expanding the car park by an additional 46 spaces, providing more capacity for passengers travelling to and from the station by road.
As a result, we will be closing Hebden Bridge Signal Box in October 2018, marking a new era of signalling technology in the Calder Valley. We are currently working with a local Hebden Bridge community organisation on how we can preserve the heritage of the signal box to make sure it remains a community asset.
