We work 24/7 to keep the rail network running, with scheduled maintenance work and planned upgrades helping to meet growing demand from passengers.

This page provides information about work taking place on the railway in North Somerset

North Somerset bridge works

Towards the end of 2019 we carried out the refurbishment of two bridges in North Somerset:

  • Summer Lane Bridge west of Worle
  • Clevedon Road Bridge near Weston-super-Mare

These refurbishments involve grit blasting, metal work repairs and repainting.

We have a little more work to do on Summer Lane bridge to complete waterproofing of the structure. This will take place in early 2020.

Clevedon Road bridge needs some more significant steel and masonry repairs. These will resume on 13 January and last for up to three weeks, with two-way traffic lights in place.

In order to prevent further deterioration of the structure in the meantime, the scaffolding and temporary cladding remain in place.

Flax Bourton track renewal

During September and October 2019 we successfully completed the renewal of a section of the railway line that runs through Flax Bourton railway tunnel.

This involved removing the old rails, sleepers and ballast (stones), laying a new membrane to improve drainage and then installing the new rails, sleepers and ballast. The bulk of the work took place over two weekends in October.
