This page explains the work we'll be doing in Gloucestershire and when it's due to take place.
The Ocean bridge, Stonehouse
We are replacing the railway bridge over Christmas 2021 at The Ocean, Stonehouse, on behalf of the Cotswold Canals Connected Project as part of its plans to restore four miles of canal between Stonehouse and Saul Junction.
The new bridge has been cast in concrete sections on site and will be lifted in by crane during a temporary closure of the railway. Our teams will be working around the clock from 10pm on Friday 24 December to 4am on Saturday 1 January. Due to the nature of the project and the machinery we use, some of our work will be noisy. We are sorry for any disturbance we cause.
So that the work can be carried out safely, a stretch of the canal close to the bridge has been sectioned off with portable dams and drained. Through a system of pipes and pumps, water is flowing downstream, keeping the Ocean empty. It will be refilled early next year when the work is complete.
Train services between Gloucester and Bristol will be affected by the work. From 27 December to 31 December inclusive, buses replace trains between Gloucester and Bristol Temple Meads; these buses will call at Cam & Dursley, Yate and Bristol Parkway. Please note, there are no services on 25 and 26 December.
Please check before you travel at National Rail Enquiries.
