As part of our Railway Upgrade Plan, we will upgrade the level crossing in Whittington over the summer.
The crossing is located in the village of Whittington, where the A495 crosses the railway line connecting Shrewsbury and Gobowen. From Friday 30th August to Monday 9 September, the road will be closed to motorists while this upgrade is underway.
During the temporary closure of the level crossing, we will be able to completely upgrade it. This essential work will significantly extend the life of the crossing and help prevent future closures. We will install new level crossing panels made from black rubber rather than concrete; this new surface will be far more durable and smoother for vehicles using the crossing, including cyclists.
The works will include:
- Removing the existing level crossing and road surface
- Excavating foundations to approximately one metre
- Pouring concrete into new foundations
- Applying new rubber road surface
- Reinstatement of road surface
- Applying road markings
As we need to temporarily close the road for nine days, we have developed a diversionary route with Shropshire Council which will divert traffic via the B5009 south to Wootton. This route will be fully signposted throughout the road closure. Pedestrian access will be maintained over the level crossing when we are not actively working on it.
A copy of the route can be downloaded here.
We will work at the level crossing when trains aren’t running on the following dates and times.
This will take place overnight on Wednesday 28th, Thursday 29th and Friday 30th August.
This will take place:
- from 23.55 on Saturday 31st August until 05:15 on Monday 2nd September
- each night from Monday 2nd September to Friday 6th September (inclusive)
- from 23.55 on Saturday 7th September until 05.15 on Monday 9th September
Changes to rail services
On Sunday 1st September and Sunday 8th September, we will need unrestricted access to the level crossing. During this time, trains will not be running between Shrewsbury and Wrexham. There will be a rail replacement bus service in operation between the two stations. We advise all passengers to check www.nationalrail.co.uk before travelling.
