Mill Street bridge replacement

We’re replacing the railway bridge on Mill Street, Wem.

Mill Street bridge, Wem

In December 2021, we will be replacing the rail bridge on Mill Street, which carries the railway between Shrewsbury and Crewe.

The bridge has come to the end of its life so replacing it now will ensure we can continue to run a safe and efficient railway and ensure reliable journeys for rail passengers and road users for many more years to come.

When will the work take place?

Preparation work is already underway, and our site compound has been set up in the field behind Hazport Ltd, alongside the railway. Much of the preparatory works have been planned to be undertaken during daytime hours, Monday to Friday. Some activities, however, will be carried out on weekends and during the night time when trains aren’t running.

The core work will be carried out from 23:00 on Friday 24 December to 04:00 on Wednesday 29 December when our staff will be working 24 hours a day, as no trains will be running.

Follow up work will take place until mid-January 2022.

Changes to passenger services

There will be a rail replacement bus service in operation between Shrewsbury and Crewe on Monday 27 and 28 December. Please visit National Rail or Transport for Wales for more information.
