A £4.25m upgrade project will replace two railway bridges in Pembrokeshire in 2019.

We will be replacing Pembroke Road railway bridge (which crosses Pembroke Road) and Milford Road railway bridge (which crosses the A4076 on Dredgeman Hill) both set in Merlins Bridge, Haverfordwest. The upgrade project is part of our Railway Upgrade Plan and will improve the resilience and reliability of the railway for passengers.

Both railway bridges, which carry the South Wales Mainline, require this essential work as part of our commitment to maintain a safe and reliable railway. Milford Road underbridge was last reconstructed in 1939. Pembroke Road underbridge was originally built in 1856 and the bridge deck was last reconstructed in 1937, and so both bridges are coming toward the end of their lifespan.

Alongside us, the primary contractor on site will be AmcoGiffen.

During the core weekends of work at each bridge we will be:

  • removing the rail track bed
  • demolishing and removing the existing bridge deck and returning it to the compound
  • transporting the new bridge to site and fixing it in place
  • completing drainage and waterproofing
  • reinstating the rail track bed
  • completing essential safety checks.

Following the successful completion of the Pembroke Road rail bridge renewal, Pembroke Road has now re-opened and train services between Whitland and Milford Haven have resumed as normal. We demolished and removed the existing bridge deck and installed a new steel  structure, which includes a concrete collision beam to provide extra resilience.

Milford Road railway bridge

The core work to replace Milford Road railway bridge will take place from 19:00 on Friday 15 February until 06:00 on Monday 18 February. The A4076 at Milford Road railway bridge will be fully closed during this time and there will be a shuttle bus in operation to transport pedestrians and cyclists from one side of the bridge to the other. A full diversionary route will be in place for motorists.

The main site compound for our work on Milford Road is located at the existing builders yard on Dredgemans Hill. Site set up commenced in January and we will have a presence on site until Spring 2019.

Changes to rail services for passengers

Network Rail is working in partnership with TfW Rail Services to minimise disruption during this upgrade work and a bus replacement service will be in operation between Whitland and Milford Haven for rail passengers on Saturday 16 February and Sunday 17 February. There will also be amendments to the timetable during this weekend so passengers are advised to check before they travel at www.nationalrail.co.uk

Finishing works: Single lane traffic management

Following the replacement of both bridge decks our engineers will complete essential finishing works to include masonary repairs, track tamping and construction of retaining walls.

To ensure we can complete all these works safely and effectively at both bridges a single lane traffic management system will be in operation, on the A4076 at Milford Road railway bridge (Dredgeman Hill) and on Pembroke Road at the railway bridge overnight, intermittently, until the end of March 2019.

Drop-in events

We hosted drop-in events on Tuesday 4 December, January 10 and February 7 at the Merlins Bridge Welfare Hall (village hall), Pembroke Road, SA61 1JW.
