Due to the concerns around the safety of the public using South Milford level crossing, we are now investigating a full closure of the crossing.
South Milford level crossing is a pedestrian crossing on the line between Church Fenton and Normanton. The crossing is situated to the east of South Milford.
Currently, the level crossing is temporarily closed due to concerns around the safety of those using it. Some of the safety concerns at the crossing include:
- Poor sighting at the crossing which makes it difficult to judge if it is safe to cross.
- The railway bridge running over the top of the crossing and the embankment can absorb and obstruct the noise of the driver sounding their horn upon approaching the level crossing. This makes it difficult for users to hear when a train is approaching and how close it is.
Rights of way
Closure of the level crossing will affect the whole of the footpath shown red below and it may be that it will close the whole of this footpath. Network Rail along with North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC) wishes to explore if there are viable alternatives to this prospect.
Thank you to those who shared their views with us regarding the level crossing and identified any alternative diversionary routes. The feedback period for this is now closed (Friday 26 March 2021). We are currently analysing the feedback received and will provide an update and next steps on this in the coming months.
