Just after 6am this morning (Thursday 23 January), a freight wagon derailed between Leyton Midland Road and Walthamstow Queens Road on the Gospel Oak to Barking line which has resulted in delays and cancellations to London Overground services this morning.

Extensive damage has been caused to the track over a two mile stretch which will need replacing before normal service can resume. The cause of the derailment is being investigated.

Our initial assessment is that repairs will take several days but further examination is required to fully understand the extent of the damage and the work we need to do to fix it.  We’re sorry for the disruption which this will cause, and we will continue to work with London Overground to keep everyone informed as we know more.

Travel Advice for Passengers

There is currently no London Overground service between Barking and South Tottenham while engineers assess the damage caused by the derailment. There is expected to be continuing disruption on the rest of the line for several days. Passengers wishing to travel between Walthamstow Central and Barking are advised to continue to check the TfL Journey Planner before travelling over the coming days. A rail replacement bus service has been provided between Walthamstow Central and Barking calling at Leyton Midland Road, Leytonstone High Road (Harrow Green), Wanstead Park and Woodgrange Park to allow passengers to complete their journey while repairs are underway.
