Easter spotlight: Two-mile Brentwood cabling renewal

08 March 2016

Over the Easter bank holiday, more than 15,000 members of Network Rail’s Orange Army will be working night and day to deliver £60m of improvements to the railway as part of the £40bn Railway Upgrade Plan.

This series of bite-size features takes a closer look at the work they’ll be carrying out across Britain to create a better, more reliable railway.

What will the work over Easter involve?

Overhead cabling, which helps power electric trains, is being renewed along the Great Eastern Main Line from London Liverpool Street to Shenfield in Essex.

To improve reliability it is being replaced with auto-tensioned overhead line equipment, which doesn’t go slack during hot weather, as can happen with older overhead cabling.

Work on the project took place around Romford at Christmas last year, and this Easter the focus is on Brentwood, where more than 2,924m (almost two miles) of cabling will be replaced.

Why are we doing the work?

High temperatures can cause overhead cables to sag and therefore lead to speed restrictions, but the new cable upgrades will lead to better train performance and more reliable passenger journeys.

How will Easter train services be affected?

On Friday 25 March and Saturday 26 March there won’t be a Transport for London (TfL) rail service between Gidea Park and Shenfield, but there will be a train every 15 minutes on the rest of the line. Replacement bus services will call at all stops between Gidea Park and Shenfield.

On Friday 25 March, Saturday 26 March and Monday 28 March, there will be no Abellio Greater Anglia (AGA) services between London Liverpool Street and Ingatestone or Wickford. AGA replacement buses will run between Ingatestone and Wickford to Newbury Park for the Central line.

On Sunday 27 March, there will be no TfL rail or AGA services between London Liverpool Street and Shenfield, Chelmsford and Wickford. TfL replacement buses will run via Newbury Park and Stratford (for the Central line).  AGA replacement buses will operate from Witham, Chelmsford and Wickford to Newbury Park for the Central line.

On Monday 28 March, buses will replace trains between London Liverpool Street and Shenfield. TfL replacement buses will run via Newbury Park and Stratford (for the Central line). AGA replacement buses will operate from Ingatestone and Wickford to Newbury Park for the Central line.
