Apply now for a place on our 2013 advanced apprenticeship scheme

15 January 2013

There are around 240 places available on the three year scheme which has five engineering programmes, each one giving you the chance to work in a critical area of the business, and where your development will continue beyond the three years of the scheme.

The scheme

You’ll spend a year training alongside the Royal Navy at Europe’s largest engineering training facility at HMS Sultan in Hampshire. There you learn both the technical skills required to work on the railway and develop leadership and teamwork behaviours to be effective in your work. For the next two years you learn your trade, working within an experienced team, continuing to return to HMS Sultan regularly for additional courses and training.

Earn while you learn

Not only will you be paid when you successfully complete the first year, (the salary will rise in years two and three) we’ll also pay for accommodation in the first year and provide all the clothing and personal protective equipment. There will be paid travel home as well as 28 days holiday plus bank holidays.

The apprenticeship could lead to a degree

When you’ve successfully completed the three year programme you’ll have NVQ, BTec and ILM (Institute of Leadership and Management) qualifications. An apprenticeship can also open doors to a university education. There are further opportunities to study part-time for a Higher National Certificate in engineering and then onto a foundation degree and a bachelors at Sheffield Hallam University.

“ I am thrilled to have completed my HNC and although it was difficult it has really helped to get me ready for the rest of my degree. By the end of next summer I hope to have completed my foundation degree in engineering and then onto the bachelors. My depot and Network Rail as a whole have been really great with supporting me during my studies and I look forward the successfully completing in 2015. ”
