Footpath crossings

These crossings have stiles or self-closing gates on both sides of the railway. Some crossings have lights and a telephone.

Footpath crossing 

  1. Stop, look both ways and listen to make sure a train is not coming.
  2. If you see or hear a train coming, do not cross.
  3. If you are crossing with a horse or when the signage instructs you to do so, you must use the telephone provided to get permission to cross.
  4. If no train is coming, cross quickly, remain alert and never stop on the crossing.
  5. You must call railway staff back after crossing if they asked you to.

  1. Stop, check that the lights are working, if they aren’t contact railway staff if a telephone is provided.
  2. If you are crossing with a horse you must use the telephone provided to get permission to cross.
  3. You must not cross when the red light is on.
  4. If the red light stays on after a train has passed, do not cross – another train is coming.
  5. Only cross when the green light is on. Cross quickly, stay alert and never stop on the crossing.
  6. You must call railway staff back after crossing if they asked you to.

Remember when crossing

  • Look both ways and listen.
  • Trains can come from both directions.
  • Don’t rely on the timetable to assume a train is not coming.
  • If you see or hear a train coming, do not cross.
  • If crossing with children, keep them close to you.
  • If crossing with a dog, keep it on a lead.
  • If crossing with a horse we suggest you dismount your horse before crossing.
  • Don’t stop on a crossing.
  • If there are gates, never leave them open.
  • Call railway staff back after crossing, if you have been asked to do so.
