The freight market study is one of four Market
Studies produced as part of the Long Term Planning Process. Together,
the London and South East, long distance, regional urban and freight market studies set out
how passenger and freight demand is expected to change in each of these markets
in Britain over the next 30 years.
The Freight Market Study provides information
on how the rail freight market has changed in recent years, evidence on how the
rail freight market is expected to continue to grow in Britain, and is based around key market
sectors including intermodal (deep
sea and domestic), coal
and the new market of biomass. The study sets out some of the key features of
each market and how they might change in the future. The study also sets out
the approach to freight train routeing which will be used by the Long Term
Planning Process in the forthcoming, route studies.
The Freight Market Study was consulted upon responses
considered, and published as a final version.
