  • Our plans: Manchester Piccadilly

We need to install new platforms at Manchester Piccadilly station to enable more trains to travel through Manchester and across the North of England.

  • Manchester Piccadilly Station

    The plans include:

    • The construction of two new through platforms (15 and 16) next to the existing platforms 13 and 14
    • Extension of the existing passenger footbridge to access the new platforms

    Chosen alignment

Following analysis of three options, Option C is now being progressed for further development.

     Manchester Piccadilly Station Option C

This option consists of an elevated viaduct tying into the existing railway viaduct at Altrincham Street, crossing London Road and passing in between the existing viaduct and the Macdonald Hotel.

From here it would pass over the existing electrical substation, (which would be reconfigured as part of the scheme) and tie back into the existing railway to the north east of the Star and Garter at the junction of Fairfield Street and Temperance Street.

    Advantages

    • This alignment avoids the Grade II listed Star and Garter pub
    • It minimises potential impact on the nearby Macdonald hotel and local road network
    • It provides the greatest opportunity to improve the surrounding public space and could complement the Mayfield Road station redevelopment
    • It is visually more sensitive and easier to construct.
