We've added and extended platforms so more trains can run, with more carriages and faster journeys, and improved facilities at the station
Peterborough station is a vital railway interchange for local commuter services and long-distance train services covering all points of the compass. As well as being an important local station, it’s one of the main stops on the East Coast Mainline.
In 2014 we completed a £43m improvement project to improve services from and through the station. It included building two new platforms just for cross-country east-west services, to separate them from north-south services and so reduce disruption in the area. We’ve also built a new platform for future London-bound high-speed services from Peterborough.
In addition to introducing three new platforms and improving signalling, we’ve lengthened platforms 2, 3, 4 and 5. The station can now accommodate more trains and longer, 12-carriage trains – which means more seats for passengers.
The station upgrades will lead to better services for passengers, with more trains to different destinations, fewer delays, and faster journey times to come in the future. They will also help to create the extra capacity needed to meet the predicted doubling in passenger numbers on services to London over the next 25 years.
To help increase rail freight capacity between the port of Felixstowe, the Midlands and beyond, we has upgraded the track layout to the west of the station to allow for longer freight trains carrying larger volumes.
We’ve rebuilt the station building to create a brighter, more spacious environment for passengers, and installed new footbridges and lifts for step-free access.
