  • European rail freight corridor – linking UK and continental Europe

  • We have undertaken a consultation exercise on behalf of the Department for Transport regarding the potential establishment of a European rail freight corridor linking the UK with continental Europe, key objectives for which are to increase the competitiveness of international rail freight and improve co-ordination across Europe for end users.

The paper was produced by Network Rail in consultation with Reseau Ferré de France, Infrabel, Eurotunnel Group and HS1 Limited as an initial market assessment, review of the options and the socio-economic case for the potential development of a European freight corridor for rail between the UK and other EU member states.

This is in line with European Union regulation 913/2010 concerning a European rail network for competitive freight and is intended to assist the UK and associated member states’ transport ministries to make a decision around whether or not to support the establishment of a corridor.

The consultation is now complete. A summary of the responses received and next steps have been agreed with the Department for Transport and can be found below.

Further information will be provided either by the Department for Transport or on this section of our website, as appropriate.
