East Coast Main Line

The East Coast Main Line is one of the busiest and most successful railway lines in Britain. The line provides a vital north-south artery for long distance traffic from London to Scotland via Yorkshire and the North East, as we well as serving a great many commuter and regional passenger markets and carrying a significant amount of rail freight.

In addition to informal consultation with a wide group of stakeholders throughout the process, a formal consultation took place between June and September 2007. The resulting strategy includes more passenger and freight trains, longer commuter trains and improvements to the infrastructure.
