Gatwick Airport

The present station was opened by British Rail in 1958 and was built on the original Gatwick racecourse, which it was intended to served from its original inception in 1891. Over 11 million people pass through Gatwick every year.

Tickets and information

The main ticket office is located at the rear of the concourse and is open for tickets 24 hours a day.

The information desk is on the concourse and is open between 06.30 and 19.00 for general assistance.

There are payphones and e-mail facilities on the concourse and platforms.

Taxis

The taxi rank is located in the Airport south terminal. Alternatively, please visit traintaxi ltd for further information.

Buses

The main bus station is accessible from the Airport south terminal.

Parking

Both short and long-term parking is available near both the north and south terminals.


First aid

First aid is available at all times. Please go to the information desk or ticket office.

Toilets

Toilets (including those for the disabled) are at the south end of platform 1. Additional toilets and baby changing facilities are also available in the Airport South terminal.

Photo booths

There are a number of photo booths at the station where photos for passports, travel passes and other identity documents can be obtained.

Trolleys

Luggage trolleys are located at two points around the station, at the footbridge leading to the Airport, and on the station concourse.

Note: Luggage trolleys are coins operated.

Lifts

There is access to the station and airport facilities by lift. Lifts link the platforms to the Airport terminal via the station footbridge link.

Lost property

The lost property office is at the top of the escalators to platforms 3 and 4 and is open between 09.30 and 13.00 from Monday to Friday. Please ask a member of staff for assistance if required. You can also call 020 8666 6902.

Some interesting facts and figures about the history of Gatwick Airport station.

Chronology

  • The station site started operating as Gatwick for the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway (LBSCR).
  • The original was closed in 1876 but was reopened by the LBSCR in 1891.
  • It was renamed Gatwick Racecourse in 1946 then renamed Gatwick Airport on 27 May 1958.
  • The first Gatwick Airport station was on the site of Tinsley Green which closed the day after Gatwick Airport was opened. Major rebuilding work took place between 1967 and 1968, with further work in the 1980s.

Station design

  • The present upper level concourse deck was designed by the British Rail Southern regional architect’s office under N. G. Wikeley.

Interesting facts

  • Gatwick Airport is probably the world’s first station dedicated to serving an airport.
