Cannon Street

Cannon Street is one of seventeen UK railway Stations owned and managed by Network Rail Infrastructure Ltd and is located in the financial district of London. The station was opened by the original South Eastern Railway on 1st September1866 after an act of Parliament passed in 1861. The station originally had eight Platform and a 1990s refurbishment of the station removed platform 1

Thousand of commuters travel daily to work or simply for leisure purpose. Train services are operated by South Eastern Railway running train services directly to the station from suburban South East London, Kent and East Sussex.

The station is closed on Sundays but occasionally open during track maintenance between London Bridge and Charing Cross

Tickets and services

The main travel centre/ticket office is located on the lower concourse at the front of the main entrance with further ticket machines on the upper concourse. For train and ticket refund information please contact 087 06 03 04 05

Telephones

Payphones are located in front of the ticket office on the lower concourse and behind the Customer Information Screens on the Station upper concourse

Taxis

The taxi pick-up and set down point is on Dowgate Hill. Taxis should enter Dowgate Hill from Cloak Lane via College Hill.

Buses

There are two main bus stops at the front of the station from which the Station entrances are accessible

British Transport Police

The British Transport Police can be contacted 24 hours a day on 020 7380 1400 should you require any assistance contact a member of station staff.

First Aid

If First Aid is required please ask a member of staff for assistance as we have qualified First Aid personnel on the station to administer first aid.

Toilets

Toilets are located on the upper concourse of the station ladies and gents’ toilets each with baby changing facilities are accessible on the upper concourse behind the Customer Information screens.

People with special needs will locate accessible toilets beside the passenger lift on the lower concourse of the station. It can be operated by RADAR key holders- if you do not have RADAR key at your disposal please ask a member of staff for assistance. Baby changing facilities are also available within the accessible toilets

There are also accessible departure boards, ramps for trains access, accessible taxis, accessible public telephones, national radar key toilets, step free access, and accessible parking bay on Dowgate Hill/Cab road

Bicycles

There are no cycle storage facilities at Cannon Street Station but public bicycle stands are located on Dowgate Hill and Bush Lane, either side of the station.

London Underground

The London Underground station is a sub-surface station, situated immediately below the mainline station. It is served by the District and Circle Lines. Entrances are located on both Cannon Street and Dowgate Hill Road. The London Underground station is open from Mondays to Fridays until 20:58 each day and Saturdays from 07:31 to 19:29 the station is closed on Sundays.

D - History

Chronology

  • An Act of Parliament passed in 1861 granted permission for the construction of a Railway station known as Cannon Street Station
  • The Cannon Bridge and the Station which is less than a mile from London Bridge Railway station was designed by Engineer Sir John Hawkshaw
  • The construction works commenced in the year 1863.
  • The construction was completed in 1866 and the station was officially opened by South Eastern Railway on 1st September 1866.
  • The Station has been rebuilt twice since its inception before 1st World War when the Bridge was strengthened for heavier locomotive movements and in 1981 when the station structure was reconstructed by former British Rail and now a redevelopment plan for London Cannon Street Station (Cannon Place Development) is schedule to commence in 2007.

Station design/ Interesting facts

  • The Station is a terminal Station
  • The original station glass roof was destroyed during the II World War
  • All that remains of the station’s original architecture are the twin 120-ft red-brick tower on the country end of the station.
  • Large office blocks built over the station platforms in 1980
  • Scene of major rail disaster on 8th January 1991 which resulted in two fatalities and 200 injuries.
  • There was originally eight platform on the station, refurbishment works in 1990 removed platform 1
