To reduce CO2 emissions from offices, stations and depots by 20 per cent.
We are on track to achieve our target

    On Track Status

    Last year's target:

To achieve a 20 per cent reduction in energy related CO2 emissions arising from corporate offices, managed stations and depots by 2014, based on 2006/07 consumption figures

    • Since 2006/07 we have reduced our carbon footprint by 4.6 per cent
    • This is due to the initial effects of our behavioural change work and to better data collection
    • There has also been less reliance on estimated meter readings
    • We looking to reduce emissions further in the coming years with the projects we are preparing to roll out.

95 per cent of SSSIs in a favourable or recovering condition.
We are on track to achieve our target

    On Track Status

    Last year's target:

95 per cent of the Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in favourable or recovering condition by 2010 to support Natural England’s 2010 target

    • Natural England agreed a Public Service Agreement target in 2000
    • This was to bring 95 per cent of the land contained within SSSIs into a favourable or recovering condition by December 2010
    • The delivery of this target is coordinated by them, and 21 of our SSSIs are included in it
    • Natural England has reported that 82.1 per cent of these 21 SSSI sites are now in favourable or recovering status
    • This is compared to 52.2 per cent of the 21 Sites in 2008/09.

To divert 60 per cent of waste from stations, offices and depots from landfill.
We are on track to achieve our target

    On Track Status

    Last year's target:

To divert 60 per cent of waste from managed stations and Network Rail offices and depots from landfill by 2014

    • Last year we re-used, recycled and recovered approximately 18.8 per cent of waste from our buildings
    • Our depot buildings mainly collect litter and waste from flytipping
    • We will continue to discourage flytipping by improving fencing and other measures.

To revise our environmental management system over the next two years.
We are on track to achieve our target

    On Track Status

    Last year's target:

Over the next two years, we will be carrying out a revision of our EMS to identify areas of improvement

    • We have commissioned an independent review of our EMS to help identify where improvements can be made
    • Work is on-going to update our environmental standards, processes and guidance notes in line with the recommended improvements.

To have no incidents that impact on the environment.
We are on track to achieve our target

    On Track Status

    Last year's target:

Our aspiration is to have no incidents that impact the environment

    • Unfortunately we had 2 reportable significant environmental incidents in 2009/10
    • These were reported to the Environment Agency/SEPA and were associated with our maintenance works
    • Although this does not meet our target, it is below six, which is our maximum target threshold for reportable significant environmental incidents
    • Our aspiration remains to have zero reportable significant environmental incidents.

To identify sustainable planting options for our lineside.
    We have achieved our target

    Achieved Status

    Last year's target:

We are developing a programme to identify sustainable options for the lineside environment

    • The project aims to reduce the impact of things like slope instability, weather, and burrowing animals on the operational railway, whilst providing habitat to a diverse range of species
    • We have established a technical working group to develop planting solutions
    • Planting on ten trial sites will begin in 2010/11 and will be monitored over a five year period
    • We will then update our Biodiversity Action Plan across the whole of our network.

To consider the Tree Council's findings in our Biodiversity Action Plan update.
We are on track to achieve our target

    On Track Status

    Last year's target:

We will consider the findings of our work with the Tree Council in relation to the whole network and update our Biodiversity Action Plan

    • The Tree Council is a key stakeholder and part of the technical working group in our sustainable lineside project
    • We will use the results of work with The Tree Council to update our Biodiversity Action Plan across the whole of our network.

To divert 95 per cent of National Delivery Service managed waste from landfill.
We are on track to achieve our target

    On Track Status

    Last year's target:

To divert 95 per cent of waste managed by Network Rail National Delivery Service (NDS) from landfill by 2014

    • 90.3 per cent of 1.48m tonnes of waste handled by NDS was re-used, recycled or recovered in 2009/10
    • We will continue to work towards our 95 per cent target for 2014.

To implement technology at Westwood to try and achieve zero waste.
We are on track to achieve our target

    On Track Status

    Last year's target:

During 2009/10 we will be implementing technology at our leadership development centre in Coventry to develop our first zero waste facility

    • Westwood currently recycles cardboard, paper, glass and oil
    • All food waste from the kitchens goes into a machine which reduces waste by 80 per cent by removing water
    • Over the next year we will look at compost the remaining 20 per cent of kitchen waste
    • We are looking to use technology which destroys solid organic waste at source
    • Our ultimate goal is zero-landfill at Westwood.

To use 85 per cent of deployable water from the Severn and Mersey tunnels.
We need to do more to achieve our target

    Do More Status

    Last year's target:

To use 85 per cent of deployable water from the Severn and Mersey Tunnels by 2014

    • In 2009/10 only 17.3 per cent of water recovered from the Severn and Mersey Tunnels was reused by third parties
    • This year we will review the feasibility of our 85 per cent target for 2014
    • For 2010/11 we will review our target and continue to seek ways to encourage the reuse of the water that we dispose of from these tunnels.

    On Track Status

    Last year's target:

To replace approximately 5,200 electricity meters with automatic reader meters by 2012

    • In 2010/11 we will begin installing smart electricity meters
    • These will provide improved information to help us monitor and manage consumption
    • We are working to identify and prioritise the specific sites to receive meters
    • We intend to install approximately 5,500 smart electricity meters across the business by 2012.

    On Track Status

    Last year's target:

We are also committed to employing current and new technology to improve our performance at stations

    • As part of our redevelopment of Kings Cross station we intend to install photovoltaic (PV) cells
    • This is intended to supply ten per cent of the refurbished station’s base energy demand with renewable energy sources
    • We also intend to use photovoltaic cells in the station roof design of the Blackfriars station redevelopment
    • Blackfriars is due for completion in early 2012
    • It is intended that the PV cells supply up to 70 percent of the station’s power needs
    • We are seeking opportunities for the use of energy efficient technology in our future station construction projects.

We are on track to achieve our target

    On Track Status

    Last year's target:

During 2009/10 we will begin our planned work with the Carbon Trust. Together we will establish where to focus our energy to achieve our 20 per cent reduction target

    • During 2009/10 energy audits of some of our sites were undertaken in partnership with the Carbon Trust
    • Audits were carried out at our 18 managed stations, six of our maintenance depots and at our leadership development centre, Westwood
    • The audits have produced a range of energy efficiency and carbon reduction options and an implementation plan is being developed
    • The work also included a series of workshops to engage staff and develop action plans for individual depots.
