    For 2009/10 we have set ourselves a challenging target of resolving 90 per cent of all enquiries from the public within 20 days by April 2010

    • In the three periods prior to April 2010, we reached our target of resolving 90 per cent of reported lineside issues within 20 days
    • Lineside issues include site clearance requests, removal of litter, graffiti, fly tipping and vegetation management
    • This year we aim to improve out turnaround time for all enquiries from the public to our National Helpline.

    Continuation of the No Messin’! youth campaign, website and live events.

    • We held six No Messin’ live events in 2009/10
    • These events aim to offer alternatives to young people to help reduce incidents of misuse on the railway
    • We have formed a number of partnerships with community groups in our top priority locations
    • These groups aim to provide long term, sustainable reductions in railway crime and improvements in safety.

    Changing user behaviour by direct engagement with the public and the strategic targeting of the most misused crossings in the network

    • We held a total of 111 Level Crossing Safety Awareness Days in 2009/10 at top priority locations across Britain
    • These events have involved working in partnership with the British Transport Police, local police forces, local authorities and community groups
    • These partners would speak to level crossing users; offering safety advice and leaflets with the message ‘Would it Kill You to Wait?’.

    To identify suitable sites to plant trees following lineside vegetation removal.

    Joint working initiative with the Tree Council to identify and fund suitable sites for tree planting in areas where it has been necessary to remove lineside vegetation for safety reasons

    • We have set up a Community Planting Fund for 2010/11
    • We have funded an initiative for people in areas where large-scale vegetation removal has taken place to re-plant trees away from the railway
    • This keeps the railway safe, is environmentally friendly, and gives community groups the opportunity to enhance their local surroundings.

    • We have not yet introduced a self-service element to our website but this remains an aspiration
    • We have established a FAQs section on the website and this will be updated in the future.

    Perform market research to gather the views of our lineside neighbours which will help us tailor the information and services we provide to them

    • By using a sophisticated demographic data tool we have improved our understanding of local communities and social groups
    • All data received through contact to our helpline is logged into our system
    • This allows us to create maps of enquires and see quickly where hotspots appea
    • This data allows us to provide tailored communications to the communities in which we work
    • This data also allows us to resolve issues faster.

    Simplifying our processes and improving internal communication of our charitable giving policies

    • Our matched giving, GAYE and volunteer leave processes are currently under review
    • We hope to move more of this online over the coming year
    • Work is also ongoing to improve communication and to simplify externals processes
    • For example, guidance and policy documents were published in 2009/10 for registered charities wishing to hold collections our managed stations.

    Increasing the monitoring and reporting of both inputs and outputs of our charitable giving strategy

    • In 2009/10 we introduced a new monitoring and evaluation process for our charity partnerships
    • The first phase of this monitoring and evaluation process will be carried out in 2010
    • We will report on the outcomes of this in our next corporate responsibility report
    • We will continue to review our contributions to local charity partners and community projects.

    Developing our network of charity champions across the business, who help promote awareness and raise funds for our charity of choice, with more structured aims and better communication to help raise more money

    • In 2009/10 we recruited new charity ambassadors from across our business
    • We currently have 45 charity ambassadors
    • We held two charity ambassador events in 2009/10, and have increased and improved our communication with this network of employees.
